This summer I will be making an inspection trip all over Costa Rica. So, first of all I would like to invite everyone to follow my adventures on Facebook and/or Instagram. For sure I will be posting nice pictures of this amazing country, the hotels I visit and the activities I will try. But most importantly, I have chosen to go and help out Maria and Puerto Viejo Dogs on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. And you can help me do that. Please read on to find out how and why.

Who are Maria and Puerto Viejo Dogs?

Some of you may still remember Maria from that summer in which the area around Puerto Viejo de Talamanca got completely flooded and people lost their (wooden) houses, crops, animals,...everything basically. If you missed it, you can read more about that in the blog post In Costa Rica angels wear rubber boots. Anyways, I met Maria many years ago in Puerto Viejo when I was volunteering there myself. Ever since, I have a tremendous respect and endless admiration for her and all the kindness she shares every day, again and again.

Puerto Viejo Dogs is an organization which helps mainly dogs but also cats in need as well. Their work consists of rescuing mistreated and abandoned dogs, education of local dog owners, vaccination and castration campaigns, as well as controlling the stray animal population through the humane method of spaying and neutering, They also find forever homes for the rescued animals. Let me give you some real-life success-stories of what they have accomplished. Pictures can say so much more than words.

Before and after

This is Perri. Perri was found in Bribri, a local community near Puerto Viejo in a very bad shape as you can see on the picture. It was not only her appearance that looked bad, she also had a bad heart and analytics. The people of Puerto Viejo Dogs spend some months thinking every week: let's give her just one more week...And against all odds, she made it and became a happy, healthy dog with a new forever home.

Canelo got hit by a machete. His face was completely open, the machete even hit through the bone structure as you can see. We have chosen this picture because the outside was too horrible to show. He had to go to the animal hospital in San José several times to operate and place pins. He is now living very happily with Maria as she tends to take in the worst cases herself. He has the most expressive face and a real attitude. I look forward to finally meeting him when visiting Maria in August - September this year. For sure you will get to see more pictures of him then.

Luci was a hunting dog. They are kept skinny as it is believed they will hunt better then. She was in a car accident and broke a leg. Meanwhile she is happily adopted.

What else do they do?

Aside from countless success stories which I can't put in one blog post, Puerto Viejo Dogs also goes into the field to help, to vaccinate the dogs, to check the vets, to educate, to provide proper collars as the ropes some people put on the dog causes injuries in their necks, to help provide food when floodings occur in the most poor area's,.. and so much more. I can make a movie of all the work they do and all the dogs they have already been able to help. And maybe this summer I will actually do that.

How can you help me help them?

During my upcoming business trip to Costa Rica, I will also schedule two weeks to go and help Maria and Puerto Viejo dogs. This means that I will be there in person to pay for veterinary costs, help built a fence around Maria's garden to keep the rescued dogs safe while in rehabilitation, buy decent dog collars, and basically anything possible to help. The more budget I can raise, the more I will be able to do. Puerto Viejo Dogs is a small, local organization not a big international charity "company". Every donation can help and will be used completely and solely in order to help the dogs. There are no salaries or huge office buildings to be paid. Every amount, no matter how small, is very much appreciated. I will make sure it is put to good use and I will post pictures when I am there this August. You will get to see pictures of how your donation allows me to help them.

This is a unique chance to donate to a good cause while being sure your donation will not (partly) disappear. I am traveling to Costa Rica at my own expense, I will be staying with Maria for the time I help out, I will pay for any currency exchange and bank costs and of course, I will also donate what I can in these difficult, economical times.

If you are interested in helping us, please feel free to contact me at iris@yugentours.com.

You can donate by sending money to my PayPal account PayPal.Me/labasti or if you like to make a donation in euro you can do so simply by wiring money to my personal bank account (not to YŪGEN tours as I want all money to go to the dogs, not my business or government taxes.
